JOUR 2 – Apprendre à les connaître

After I listened to Alex Overwijk @AlexOverwijk talk about his journey in 2P at a MEd gathering in Toronto, I knew I had to subscribe to his blog and start to read about everything he was doing.  The first blog I started with was SlamDunkMath, followed by MHF4U Mr. O’s class.  I still have both on my favourites list.  I have sinced used many of his activities, translated them all to « français ».

J’ai pris les questions de Mr. O et je les ai traduit.  Je fait cette activité depuis plusieurs années.  Les élèves réfléchissent toujours LONGUEMENT à la question qu’ils veulent me poser and ce semestre, ce n’était pas différent.  Voici les images de ce qui s’est produit cette année (pardonner les images sur les fenêtres) :

What surprises me every year is the way the students answer what they want from this class.  So often, it is a certain mark, usually above 90.  I use this opportunity to question them about how they define success, would they still feel good about what took away from the course if they had an 88%?  an 84%?  Is it the mark they are looking for?  I hope to change this mindset by the end of the semester.

J’ai pris l’idée de demander aux élèves de terminer la phrase : Les mathématiques sont comme…  C’était une excellente façon de voir leur mentalité envers le sujet en insérant un peu d’humour aussi.  Avant de leur assigner les questions, j’ai présenté les 2 exemples que les élèves de M. Orr ont écrit et je crois que ceci a beaucoup aidé à inspirer les miens.  Voici leurs réponses :

All in all, I realize that I have some growth mindset challenges ahead and with a such a loaded course that students often find so difficult, I think I also have to have my own growth mindset.  We will see what the semester brings 🙂
