Jour 9 : Les fonctions linéaires et quadratiques

Today, I really wanted to dot the Is and cross the Ts on linear and quadratic functions.  I had given the students an exit ticket following the Pyramid of Pennies activity so we started with that.

We had some interesting discussion surrounding a few of the questions.  Notably :

• How would you calculate the dimensions if you knew the amount of pennies needed…
  • The students wanted to know how to solve for a variable in a cubic function because they couldn’t isolate « n ».  We listed a few different strategies, with the graphic solution being the most well received.  Why not use DESMOS when you can?
• Why are the pennies in bunches of 13?
  • I actually tweeted Dan Meyer (YES HE ANSWERED ME) about this before giving the activity to my students because I wasn’t sure myself.
  • Turns out that 13 penny widths is the size of a penny diameter…now THAT is interesting and useful in the construction of the pyramid
• How would Marcelos added more levels to the pyramid?
  • Impressed by most of the students here as they said to just keep adding to the perimeter of the pyramid and stack upwards…no need to pick up the pyramid 😉

Après ceci, nous avons travaillé dans les deux prochains documents afin de continuer à comparer les fonctions linéaires et quadratiques.  Je voulais concentrer sur la communication de leur raisonnement et la concision et précision lorsqu’il défende un choix.

Pour le document des pommiers et conifères, le questionnement demande à l’élève d’extrapoler et de trouver l’intersection entre une fonction affine et quadratique.  Par la fin, ils sont aussi demandés de comparer l’échelle de croissance des deux.

Lors de la classification de fonctions, je demande aux élèves de faire un choix, mais d’essayer d’expliquer POURQUOI dans le moins de mots possible.

C’est ici que je peux miser sur le vocabulaire à employer et la façon de défendre son choix avec précision et concision.

À la prochaine période, nous allons corriger cette activité en faisant une petite compétition pour voir qui peut donner le raisonnement en utilisant le moins de mots 🙂
